Facts on Moon

Size- the Moon's Diameter is 3,476 kilometres (2,160 miles). It is about a quarter of the size of the Earth.

Distance from Earth- maximum (apogee) 406,697 km (252,681 miles); minimum (perigee) 356,410 km (221,438 miles).

Age- four billion years

Composition- the moon comprises an outer crust of solid rock, 150 kilometres thick and a central core of solid metal, with a very small inner core of molten metal. The surface of the moon is covered with a layer of fine dust.

Orbit- the moon takes 27.32 days to orbit the earth. Its orbit is an ellipse.

Atmosphere- there is no atmosphere on the moon. Its low gravity might have caused its atmosphere to escape.

Surface temperature- temperatures on the Moon's surface are very extreme, ranging from +100°C to -200ÂșC, depending on whether the Sun's rays are falling on it or not.
